Club History

45 years and counting

A new professor by the name of Joel Diemer came to NMSU and discovered that there was not a rugby team on campus, so in 1976 he formed the NMSU Rugby Football Club. He began recruiting players and decided on the name of Chiles to reflect the local flavor of southern New Mexico. In just their second season, the Chiles were one of 26 teams invited to the National Collegiate Finals held at LSU, but were unfortunately unable to attend due to the distance and cost of the trip. By 1984, the Chiles were a national powerhouse in collegiate rugby and made the final four in the National Collegiate Championships in Santa Barbara, CA. It was on that fateful plane ride home from that tournament that the Las Cruces Blackhoggs were formed…involuntarily as several members of that Chiles team were first removed from the airplane and then removed from the team for causing an incident on the plane that resulted in it being diverted to another airport. Women’s rugby

Women’s rugby started in the early 1980’s (???) with the Jalapenos-we know next to nothing about them other than they appear in the NMSU Yearbook. We would love to find any of the original members of the team to get more information. As far as we know the Jalapenos were only around for a year and women’s rugby was dormant until the mid 1990’s. The club re-formed as the Lady Chiles in 1994. Founding members were ???? BY the late 90’s the Lady Chiles were contending for the Western Rugby Conference title and by 200? they made their own appearance in the National Collegiate Championship Final Four.
